Hollow Form Object: The Hybrid ONION BOY
This is a group project that I worked on with my classmate Daniela Szeoke, an outstanding 3d modeler. Together we thought of several simple concepts that we can later use to combine into one object to 3d print.
Daniela's Blo can be found here: http://art-kitekture.blogspot.com/
Here are the concepts I came up with
In my concepts I tried to create a pencil cup or vase. I also tried to make some other patterned designs so that incase my partner's work turns out to be complex, we could still work together.
Here are the concept that Daniela came up with
Similar to me, Daniela's concepts share some similarity to mine as they are also vases and cups. We decided to focus on the idea of the vase because we both really liked the cartoon head planter idea.
After some consideration, we decided to combine these two designs
My design looks like an onion, so we decided to combine that idea to make either an onion shaped planter, or to make some sort of patterned planter.
Eventually, we settled on this design
My object has a lot of gaps so it wouldn't work with a plantern. We decided to instead focus on the idea of an onion. We kept the cartoon head and body, but this time we made the head shaped like an onion. We also made the shirt patterned to incorporate the twisted lines of my object. We thought about the shape of the neck and decided to make this a vase instead as putting soil into object would be difficult since the top hole is so small. The shape would also make it hard to wash, but as a vase this object functions as intended and can definitely hold a few flowers.

In the print simulation, no infill or support structure was required, so the model is completely watertight (except the top hole) and is self supporting.
Overall, the result is stunning, but required a lot of work. Here is a fail compilation for your enjoyment:
The initial concept, couldn't print and looked rough
This one did manage to print, but at the cost of causing more problems down the line...
...problems like how will we get this attached to the head?
So we remodeled the whole figure at once, but it was slightly slanted and wouldn't print
This version was not slanted but it was impossible to attach the eyes due to an obj file type error unless simplified
But it's great that it worked out in the end!
